❏TELEVISION SHOW AND HISTORY❏
The existence of K-drama or Korean dramas cannot be denied that it has become one of the most loved entertainment. Not only for the people of South Korea itself, its spread has affected several countries
Along with its popularity, Korean dramas have actually gone through several stages of journey which then made it survive and get bigger.
1960's
The Korean drama series that first aired was titled Backstreet of Seoul in 1962 on the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) channel. Initially, the drama was intended as public education and support for the military government.
At this time, television was still a luxury item for most households and drama content was still strictly controlled by the military government.
After that, the drama Real Theater, which ran for two decades (1964–1985), emerged as a tool of anti-communist encouragement.
1970's
Television networks began to invest heavily in drama production and promotion, as it became family entertainment. In addition, many households already have televisions.
At this time, drama storylines have been more influenced by people’s daily lives than political agendas.
The rise of K-drama prompted the military government to begin to enforce tight controls and ask television networks to allocate more time for broadcasting news and educational programs.
1980s
The variety of K-drama during this period increased, starting with the influence of Japanese dramas that made Korean tv networks produce soap operas about teenage life and love stories.
Love and Ambition (1987) is considered to be representative of this period.
Apart from love stories, this period also began to introduce historical dramas (sageuks) that depicted historical events or the lives of royal rulers, such as kings, princesses, heroes and national generals.
One of the dramas marking the existence of this genre is the series 500 Years of Joseon Dynasty which aired from 1985 to 1990. This drama itself is said to be a picture of major events that occurred during the five centuries of the Joseon Dynasty.
Nostalgic dramas about people in the countryside were part of the development of this period. Series such as Pastorial Diary and Hill of Rising Sun have triggered nostalgia for viewers who can see how rapid the urbanization process is in the State of Gingseng.
1990s
Competition for television networks is getting tougher along with the loosening of government regulations and censorship. These conditions led to more investment of money and effort in drama productions.
The change was marked by the presence of the drama Eyes of Dawn, which became the first blockbuster series in history to cost around 200 million won per episode.
The drama depicts Korean history from the colonial period (1910–1945) to the Korean War (1950–1955) and tries various innovations, such as pre-production and filming that takes place abroad.
Drama about modern life also peaked during this period. This can be seen in the romantic drama titled Jealousy which aired in 1994. This soap opera presents a description of style and reality about city life.
During this time, the development of Korean dramas increased sharply, with the drama Sandglass or Hourglass achieving the highest ratings in Korean history. The drama received an average of 50.8 percent for 24 episodes and 64.5 percent for the last episode.
2000s
The emergence of online video services made K-dramas reach a larger audience from all over the world. In this era, more and more contemporary style dramas were being filmed in various locations overseas such as Bali, Paris, Budapest and Shanghai.
The Hollywood entertainment industry has taken a hit with the emergence of action-adventure dramas featuring gun battles and car chases. It was marked by the appearance of dramas such as Iris and Athena: Goddes of War.
On the other hand, contemporary romantic dramas are still leading with hits such as Winter Sonata, Full House, Secret Garden, My Love From the Star, and Descendants of The Sun.
The emergence of a new genre, fusion sageuk that combines modern touches and is historically inspired also appears in this era. Fusion sageuk is a fictional story about a real historical figure or a fictional character brought to life with a real historical setting.
Instead of presenting historical facts, fusion sageuk focuses more on the emotions and struggles of the main characters, which makes it more like a contemporary romantic drama. Such stories come through popular dramas such as Dae Jang Geum or Jewel in the Palace, Moon Embracing the Sun, Chuno or The Slave Hunters.
Along the way, with a growing number of smartphone users, webdrama treats, consisting of six to 10 episodes of five to 20 minutes each, have also developed.
In addition, more dramas have been adapted from webtoon or online comics, along with the development of this media. Title adapta
Webtoon hits include Cheese In The Trap, Misaeng, Orange Marmalade, and The Girl Who Sees Smells.
